They dismantled NCES, which had only 4 employees last I checked. Just checked and they say they have 12 now. Under Biden, they had 123 employees (FY23 Statistical Programs of the United States). nces.ed.gov/about/direct...

The National Literacy Institute is not a disinterested source here; their business is selling courses. Their numbers do not reflect data from the NCES' study (part of the PIAAC), you know, an actually rigorous study.

When I wrote my book, I made sure all the footnotes had shortened links to Internet Archive backups, worried about link rot. I was not anticipating that some of the data I’d need to preserve was tables from NCES.
I just heard this as well. The entire staff of the National Center for Education Statistics, created in 1867, has been fired.

In any case, the correct number for people who lack effective basic reading skills is 28% as per the NCES study. Many of those people are going to be perfectly capable of communicating and understanding complex ideas verbally, I would assume.

Effectively deleting the NCES by executive fiat is not only illegal (would require repeal of 2002 ESRA), it’s like gouging out the federal government’s eyes when it comes to education. /1
