#NCMNS
On this day in 2012 we were at the SVP icebreaker at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. A terrific museum and a great meeting. The field trip to NC and Virginia was superb. We also visited the Great Smoky Mountains after the meeting. Great trip! #FossilFriday

A good size comparison between a mountain lion skull and an African lion skull at the NCMNS. I love hands on stuff like this…

per the NCMNS, the duelling dinosaurs specimens have new names! the young triceratops is named murphy, and the nanotyrannus is named manteo

Whales are so oily that it's basically impossible to completely clean their skeletons. This one at NCMNS is relatively new (died 1985), so it still oozes oil from time to time. Staff monitor the blotches carefully—if the oil ever gets on the carpet, the smell is never coming out. 🐋

Pulled the ripcord on that other toxic platform. I’m a vertebrate paleontologist with NCMNS. Love taphonomy, late Cretaceous paleobiology of the western interior, and functional morphology and evolution of ceratopsians.

Visiting the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences tomorrow. I was originally planning on several collections visits throughout the Southeast and NCMNS was just for fun, but had to delay due to museum availability. So tomorrow is just NCMNS then I go home and write up what I saw this week.

Finally hanging stuff in my place that I'd been meaning to for ages. One is an Acrocanthosaurus I got from NCMNS and one is a therazinosaurus my friends drew for my bday

Damn right.

The resident sloth at the NCMNS came out into a great view for lunch today. A lot of visitors got to see him eat today!

Thinking about the spectacular mix of irrelevance, tastelessness, historical inaccuracy, and aesthetic unpleasantness that is the “children of stardust” conclusion to the NCMNS fossil exhibit. (The rest of the exhibit quite nice).

North Carolina is stunning. It is the home of red wolves and alligators and incredible fish and so many salamanders

Durham is, in many ways, a more liberal & tolerant city than Portland or Redmond. I met amazing people at the NCMNS, my JCC & my sport clubs, many of them fighting for a better state

Part of the reason why it was so cool to cover the news yesterday (beyond the #Nanotyrannus of it all) was that I saw the Dueling Dinosaurs @ncmns.bsky.social last summer! What a remarkable specimen and I can’t wait to hear about the discoveries to come! #FossilFriday

Obsessed with this “children of stardust” situation that concludes NCMNS fossil exhibit. So much going on, not least of all erasure of enslaved Africans who were first to find+correctly identify proboscidean fossils in America. (This was designed in the 90s, current staff know its weird)

Finally got a good picture of the Carolina Parakeet at the NCMNS. Took a bit because of lighting. A sad sort of specimen.

Thanks to Dr Bryan Stuart from NCMNS for his inspiring talk.

No clear answer to funding problem to keep doing repeated sampling, but I guess people just do what people want to do 😉

#fossilfriday #doyouevenliftbro Sometimes fossil blocks are too big and heavy, luckily the NCMNS DinoLab has a 10ton crane. The big block weighs around 11K and took careful rigging and planning to safely move into our custom fossil rotator.

I saw 2 hawks on the Capitol grounds on my walk. Didn't see them on my return (I wanted to try and get a picture). Must be a nest nearby. The NCMNS has set up a telescope in the past when they have a clear view of the nest. Nice teaching experience.
