Do we really not know? I was just mentioning today at my #nectfl25 presentation the case of Nicaraguan Sign Language. There are scholarly accounts (a couple I have off hand attached) but Stephen Pinker also uses it as a foundational vignette in his book The Language Instinct. Worth exploring.

We’re making money using other people’s languages—it’s our job to bridge the gap! It’s our job to continue to CONTINUE to educate ourselves, to earn our stripes and be okay with being tested. @nectfl.bsky.social #NECTFL25

We get lots of new ideas at a conference. Try ONE AT A TIME, and judge on two things:

Did it impact student engagement? Did it impact student learning?
If no/no, dump it.
If kind of, adapt it.
If YES, keep it.
Then move on to the next one. @grahnforlang.bsky.social #NECTFL25

Level 1 unit themes in a textbook were arbitrarily chosen by an author. Feel free to un-choose it. The content is not the relevance: it’s what you have students DOING with the content that increases their proficiency! #NECTFL25 @grahnforlang.bsky.social

Our students are so used to being consumers…but the data show that they are most engaged when they are the PRODUCERS. How are we giving them opportunities to do that? #NECTFL25 @grahnforlang.bsky.social
