For those interested in the tectonics: this earthquake occurred near the Mendocino triple junction where 2 strike slip transform faults and a subduction zone meet: the Cascadia subduction zone to the north, the San Andreas fault to the south and the Mendocino transform fault to the west 🧪⚒️

M6.8 earthquake near Miyazaki Japan. W-phase Moment Tensor focal mechanism and depth suggest shallow subduction thrust #earthquake, initial depth and epicenter are more consistent with deeper subduction event.

The #earthquake swarm near the Tokara islands in Japan continues today with a significant sequence of M5-ish earthquakes. Given the location and characteristics of this swarm, it is likely volcanic related.

The aftershock pattern (in purple) suggests that the M7.5 Noto earthquake ruptured bilaterally, with the preliminary NEIC slip model also indicating slip on both sides of the epicenter 🧪⚒️

There is currently an outage of real-time seismic data feeds spanning the majority of US-based networks that are contributed to EarthScope through the NEIC. We have been informed that a fiber-optic cable critical to data flow was damaged. The NEIC is currently working on a fix.

Not much discussion yet on Bluesky about the earthquake swarm (M4-5) and apparent magmatic intrusion near Fentale volcano in the East African rift system. There was earlier activity in the region in Sept/Oct. ⚒️🧪🌋

I made a quick map of historical seismicity for the region of today’s M7.6 #earthquake near the Cayman Islands. This left lateral strike slip event occurred on a fault system that produced a few similar events in size & mechanism in the last decade.
(Good to see that USGS NEIC is still online!)🧪⚒️

Another #earthquake swarm near the Salton Sea. The largest event so far is a M4.3 strike slip event. Swarms are common in the Brawley seismic zone, a transtensional area that connects the southern San Andreas Fault and the Imperial Fault in southern California. ⚒️🧪
