This is an interesting article discussing competing ideas about teaching reading.
What makes sense to me is the idea of explicitly teaching phonics and decoding.
The NGSS is similar in that it asks teachers to explicitly teach science practices and science thinking skills.

Critical discussions about LETRS, which is not backed by research, are difficult because a) it has been marketed to educators as a way to DO SOMETHING amid the "literacy crisis" and b) teachers feel more knowledgeable after LETRS.

A district in California. We haven’t adopted new curriculum every year. We actually haven’t had curriculum and still haven’t fully implemented the next generation science standards. And this is the problem.

For anyone getting ready to take on their first #OpenSciEd unit after Winter break: this one’s for you! Remember, #OpenSciEd represents the appropriate depth and rigor for those in #NGSS states: even for college-bound kids. It may not be what you’re used to, and that’s alright! 😀
