A little more character backstory today, this time from Nibas. Nibas is Tiresian; his culture is matriarchal and the goddess they worship (Grouha) sets everyone's place so social mobility of any kind is difficult.

I've offended you again." “No, no. Dammit, Razi. It's just this fucking city wearing me down. So much pain and for what? Godsdamned politics. I had enough of that in Rojornick. Lord Markus was my friend as well as my employer. His death was… we all took it hard. Then Kyris left and our company was broken up and I alone was left in that pit of vipers while Lord Markus' nephew fought the men who were trying to destroy his clan. Not with anything as clean as warfare either. Then I came down here for coin, and the House wars fractured all our companies, too." "You never told me.” "What am I supposed to do, complain about it all the time? This is my lot in life. My mere has made a final pronouncement; Grouha has shown her the stars and I'm to continue to hire out my bow... until finally comes the day when I lay both it and my body down. My path is straight as an arrow.” He looked around like he was searching for something, then not finding it, he put his head in his hands.

"Throwing him in a Lieran prison wouldn't pay off the debt he owes me," Nibas said. "Selling him to you will." "Tiresians usually don't like selling people to us," the Qalfan replied skeptically, looking Nibas up and down. Qalfa and Tiresia had had their skirmishes. Like Qalfa, Tiresia maintained its own excellent fleet of warships. Qalfa liked to take Tiresians as prisoners because the Tiresian navy trained excellent sailors—and used rowers who were not criminals or chained to their oars. Nibas gave a mercenary shrug. "We're not in Tiresia and he's not a Tiresian. And he cheated me out of ✗ astra." "That much? Maybe it's your fault for playing that high." "Pay me ✗ and we'll call it even." "That's a crime even if he does have a metal arm." "You have a Nezar on board, I hear, dabbles in magic on the side from time to time? Might not want you to let something like this go. If he doesn't work out on the oars, you can always take his arm and sell it." I shot Nibas a (look). He was getting a little too much into character for me. I didn’t need him putting ideas into this man’s head. The crew member considered. Then he nodded. "Yes, all right. ✗ Astra, and that's my last offer." It was a good deal. I was impressed. It would, indeed pay off what I owed Nibas for (the use of their floor.) If we could get Razi out of here without either of us drowning or being forced to row a galley to the ends of the earth, it would be an excellent day’s work.

“I remember the speech the captain gave us before the battle,” Nibas continued. “He said he knew most people thought gavaros fought only for coin, but they were wrong. He knew how many of us were sending our coin home to our families—slogging through the mud and blood so our wives and parents and children could have better lives. And he said he knew how many of us were there only because we had been cast out of our families, given no choice but to make our living how we could, hoping for a chance at redemption. And even those who fought because they were good at fighting…” Nibas cleared his throat and looked away uncomfortably—as if he was remembering or possibly just uncomfortable at making his own speech, even to me. Without me prodding him, he sometimes spent days saying only as many words as I could count on my hands. But now he went on. “He said it was a hidden dignity, being a gavaro, and that was what we were fighting the battle for, too—dignity. Against a man and his sons who had stolen the dignity of a woman and then cast her aside as if her life meant nothing. He made it sound like we were fighting for much more than mere coin. Reminded me of Markus." Nibas glanced at me. "Kyris, you're white as a sheet, what's wrong?"

"Is that blood on your shirt?" I asked. "Did you see action today, Nibas?" He leaned over to look. The crossbow he carried slung over his shoulder creaked, and he sighed heavily as he tried to rub the stain away, with little success. “There was an uprising on the docks. More of a mob, I guess—protesting Prinze tariffs. They stormed a ship and threw its cargo into the sea. Prinze guards put it down using arquebus. Mob was mostly unarmed, a lot of kinless. Ten people killed, but I expect it won't make the broadsheets."

What could I say to that? Nibas wasn’t wrong. Our tutors had all called the politics of the last five hundred years The Great Game of Houses. All the violence and betrayal was easier to stomach if you could reduce it to faded black ink on an old manuscript you found in a bookshop, instead of what was happening to you as you walked through the pre-dawn mists and cannon-shattered ruins on blistered feet.

I love it when the #WIPSnips word is a weird word but one I use a lot 😂 I also feel like most fantasy writers never consider what kind of condition characters' feet are in after they walk all over the known world.

After I wrapped my feet in makeshift bandages I cut from my old socks and finished dressing in tunic, jerkin, and boots, I took my ledger and sat in the chair by the almost dead fire to write down the two names from the broadsheet article I'd read last night. Nibas couldn't read, so all I ever had to tell him was that I was writing notes to myself, but he was dressing now anyway, adjusting his crossbow harness over his chest.

"It can wait till tomorrow, when you’re sober." It sounded like good advice—if I’d been sober, which I wasn't, so that meant it sounded like horrible advice, the worst advice.

Yeah, the introverted ones are hard unless they’re POV characters. My beta readers pushed me really hard with Nibas in the prequel to this one, but I’m glad they did because now I have more to work with (and I learned a lot).

Dammit. Nibas was right about one thing—I needed to stop thinking. Focus on the moment, no matter the size of the foe you’re fighting, Arsenault used to tell me when we sparred. Don’t rule the battle lost before it’s fought. More often, though, he would only say, Where are your feet? I looked down at my battered leather boots as I mounted the landing where we would split up. When we reached it, we stopped for a moment and looked at each other. I put my hands on their shoulders. Razi got the metal grip, but he didn’t seem to notice. He and Nibas really were the only men I trusted in this whole godsforsaken city.

I had not known that Arsenault had marshaled other gavaros to fight in my name, and Markus had also reminded me of Arsenault, but I knew Markus was dead because I had seen him die. There were two loads of loss to heft at once, both of them equally heavy. Dear gods, would it ever get any easier? Finally, I swallowed my grief. It sat like a stone in my empty stomach. “Nothing's wrong,” I said roughly. “Do you think it's any less important if I believe in that cause, too? My family may have cast me out, but I can't allow the Prinze to win."
