Environmental advocates highlight the importance of strong state flood rules following nor'easter
The nor’easter that hit New Jersey over the weekend caused flooding in communities across the Garden State. The storm inflicted millions of dollars in damage to homes, local businesses and municipal and critical infrastructure, including roads. The storm highlighted the need for Governor Sherrill to announce strong new flood protection rules in the coming weeks. The NJPACT REAL rules would save working families, local businesses and state and local governments millions of dollars in rebuilding costs after future storms by requiring developers to build new homes and businesses designed to withstand extreme weather events. New Jersey residents shouldn’t have to worry about whether they will be able to rebuild — they should be able to expect that their homes and businesses can withstand the increasingly severe weather conditions hitting our state. Environmental advocates issued the following statements to highlight the need for quick action. “New Jersey is no stranger to flooding. We have the data to know what to expect, and our government leaders now have the responsibility to enact science based policies that protect the lives and homes of residents,” said Jennifer M. Coffey, Executive Director of ANJEC. “This weekend’s extreme coastal flooding is exhibit A of why we...

NJ floods & lawmakers sit on their hands? We need to call out climate change denialists and support electeds who want to protect NJ from the increasing threat of flooding and environmental catastrophes. Signing the NJPACT REAL and passing the Climate Change Superfund Act is a good place to start.

The Nor’easter that hit our communities the past few days is yet another warning that New Jersey is a coastal state that’s extremely vulnerable to the effects of the climate crisis. NJ needs stronger protections like the NJPACT REAL Rules to protect our communities, homes, and economy.

We talked about the NJPACT REAL laws that are now put on pause. I explained the different between the science (Rutgers study) and policy (NJDEP). Great attendance, and questions!

The NJ PACT REAL Rules: A Solution to Flooding in New Jersey · New Jersey League of Conservation Voters
New Jersey is no stranger to destruction from intense storms, which are happening more frequently. We’ve seen an increase of nearly double the amount of extreme storms over the past 50 years. In addition to changing storm patterns, even under a moderate emissions scenario, New Jersey can still expect five feet in sea level rise by 2100. But we have hope. The New Jersey Protecting Against Climate Threats (NJPACT) NJ PACT regulations will ensure that we are resilient against the storms we know are coming, and are already here. Specifically they will help residents and businesses mitigate the destructive impacts of climate change. But they are facing enormous pushback, and we need informed, vocal supporters to make sure they are enacted as soon as possible, to help save lives and protect property. Join our webinar on July 16th at 6PM to learn about these regulations in more detail–and what you can do to ensure that these lifesaving measures are passed in New Jersey. Joining us will be Jen Coffey, the Executive Director of ANJEC (Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions); and Ed Potosnak, Executive Director, New Jersey LCV. We are honored to be co-sponsoring this webinar with ANJEC, New Jersey Highlands Coalition, Pinelands Preservation Alliance, New Jersey Sustainable Business Network, Waterspirit, Sierra Club, and New Jersey Conservation Foundation. By signing up, you agree to receive email updates from the New Jersey League of Conservation Voters and our cosponsors with ways you can advocate for and protect our environment. You can unsubscribe at any time.

Statewide Environmental Leaders Call for Protecting New Jersey from Increasing Climate ...
Media Contact: Jackie Greger, Jackie.Greger@sierraclub.org Statewide Environmental Leaders Call for Protecting New Jersey from Increasing Climate Related Flooding Threats and Implementing NJPACT REAL Rules TRENTON - TheNew Jersey Protecting Against Climate threats (NJPACT) Resilient Environment and Landscapes (REAL) rules are integral for mitigating the flooding impacts of climate change and ensuring the safety and long-lasting wellbeing of our communities. New Jersey is threatened by climate change impacts, especially rising sea levels, more intense and frequent storm events, flooding, and increasing temperature. Investments in climate resiliency are investments in livable, workable communities that support local businesses and create the foundation for neighborhoods to endure and prosper amid the increasingly severe challenges posed by climate change. The New Jersey Protecting Against Climate Threats Resilient Environments and Landscapes (NJPACT REAL) rules were adopted January 20, 2026 and are slated to be implemented on July 20, 2026. The NJPACT REAL use climate modeling to assess the impact of climate change on New Jersey through the year 2100. The NJPACT REAL rules modernize New Jersey’s land use regulations so that residents and businesses become more resilient to sea-level rise, extreme weather, chronic flooding, and other impacts of our changing climate by following the peer-reviewed climate...

Delay delay delay climate action until it's too late. We worked hard to make NJ resilient against flooding and other climate related issues. This will just leave us less prepared for what's happening right now. And it will cost us.
