NLNet grants have an interesting new rule:

"It is not allowed to use generative AI for producing artefacts of any kind, including code, design, and documentation."

Well good luck with that in 2026

This is kinda random, but this idea plus the fact that you put out all these CC assets plus the .nl TLD makes me think of nlnet.nl

I mean sure... but the forbidding of all generative AI use in NLnet funded projects means anyone who gets an NLnet grant is now handicapped. If you want open source projects to succeed or really to see LLMs used to improve the commons at all, this is a terrible policy!

The rationale given here makes sense if you helped to process NLnet grants in 2025 and then spent the next 12 months refusing to speak to any professional programmers whatsoever.

We applied for an NLNet grant for The Onion Shell, but were rejected. We disclosed that we used agents to secure the software.

We may possibly be the only standing website not compromised by TLS vulnerabilities and CA exposures this month.

Good (for the world) while it lasted. So long NLNet. 🫡
A pity you have consigned yourself to bleak irrelevance!

I'm not saying this is a deliberate effort to sabotage open source software.

However, if I was at NLnet and I wanted to damage open source as much as possible without actually shutting down the grant program, I'm not sure I could think of a better way.

Brutal stuff. Its crazy and sad that there's just nothing, no one, no institutions. NLNet is like the one known player doing something. That's all.
November 2, 2026 at 5:42 PM
I think NLNet needs some competition, frankly.

If I understand correctly, they're sort of a delegated choice engine for a tap of EU-wide funding. The idea being that delegating this to a technical rather than bureaucratic group could have better results.

Nice idea. Let's do it with more diversity.

Clearly the institutional objective of NLNet is to preserve artisanal (or “heritage”) software development practices as a way to study history.

(The context is someone being stupid about NLNet, who are evidently one of the few orgs that actually offers grants to open-source developers, clarifying their genAI policy)

There are, like sovereign tech fund, open source pledge and more! But NLNet is the one that administers most of the EU Horizon funds for tech
October 28, 2026 at 2:58 PM
i sympathise with the reviewers, but i also sympathise even more with nlnet for the emotional turmoil that LLM coding reshuffle some of the deepest assumption that underlie the organisation

they give money to people to make code because code is scarce. and now code is not scarce

@gui.do

It seems this entire policy needs a very careful read-over, not just propagation of the selected snippets that justify the readers' desired position from which to inflame?

Because other quotes can also be pulled out:
