They've been shit since NLOTH and peaked with Achtung.

NLOTH was supposed to be a Moroccan influenced record (they were recording there), but they reworked it. Brian Eno said it was because it sounded inauthentic, but I imagine they also wanted to play it safe with a stadium tour in the works. “Boots” just feels tacked on, and rightfully so.

Estava terminando um dos últimos capítulos do livro do Bono e coloquei o famigerado NLOTH pra tocar e putz, injustiçado demais

Yup if I’m seeing anything from NLOTH I’m already more impressed, peak taste

I still think Pop and Zooropa were their biggest missteps. Tried something new, it didn't go so well, so they returned to their old formula

NLotH at least had a decent front half of the album and Songs of Innocence and Experience were fine, but it has felt like diminishing returns for sure

That one with the lake and likings is gorg and could compete for NLOTH

You have a spectacular eye!

Interestingly, if I were to reassess that list, it likely wouldn’t change much. Not too much I’d add in… Magnificent? Some other NLOTH track? Your Song Saved My Life?

My ranking of the albums from a few years ago: Achtung, R&H, HTDAAB, Joshua Tree, Boy, ATYCLB, Unforgettable Fire, Zooropa, War, NLOTH, Songs of Experience, October, Pop, Songs of Innocence

I'm not as much of a fan anymore, particularly of anything after NLOTH. But, I will always see them when they are playing in NYC or Philly. Might not travel anymore, though we did go to Vegas earlier this year.

Finally getting around to watching the part the Oscars I missed the other night and Sean Baker's dedication of his Oscar to sex workers was unexpected and astounding. Also, #U2fam, is the wall art photograph (in an ad for homes dot com) taken by who I think it was taken by?? #NLOTH

I had honestly forgotten about Window in the Skies. When I saw this post I thought you might cite Invisible, Ordinary Love, Every Breaking Wave, NLOTH…even The Tears of Things on one of the recent EPs. There are recent clunkers, too, but they still very much know how to write a great song.

As we approach the anniversary of U2's "No Line on the Horizon," I've been revisiting the album, hoping to find a kinder perspective. I'd love to hear how your opinions of this album, and others, have evolved. How much have our musical journeys with U2 transformed over time?

ATYCLB and HTDAAB are half good and half boring IMO, NLOTH was a bit better, unfortunately the band didn't have much faith in it. And then it all went downhill IMO.

... If I redid it, I wouldn't include a Christmas song in an artist list now. I'd fit "NLOTH" and "Magnificent" in. Maybe I'd shift a few things - "Sometimes You Can't..." would move up, and it seems I missed "Zooropa," the song, and "40" - but the list has aged relatively well. Here goes...

NLOTH was indeed slightly disappointing, but had its moments.

Ja, das stimmt natürlich alles. Und ja, schön, dass sie da wieder zu viert sind.

(Ich mag aber NLOTH und die Bombe auch. Aber ich bin auch sicher nicht der „typische“ U2-Fan 😀)

Moment of Surrender started with a loop Eno hadn’t fixed when #U2 started jamming & captured magic in 1 take. Eno called it the most amazing experience of his life. Find out more Friday on the making of #NLOTH

U2’s songwriting partnership with #Eno & #Lanois for #NLOTH was actually a peacemaking gesture for failing to give creative credit on #ATYCLB. Find out more Friday on our Making of No Line on the Horizon. #U2SPHERE #U2fam #U2 #U2community
