WIPWednesday #Quiltsky! Finished piecing the top of the Smithsonian NMAI quilt along on Friday, and sent off for my quilt label! Overall, I'm pleased with it.
Pieced top from the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian quilt along in celebration of America's 250th. Top block has 5 brown bison by Lauren Good Day. Second block has yellow background with red Hawaiian floral applique (Kanani O Ka Home—The Beauty of Home) by Cissy Serrao. The third block has a colorful diamond background with an appliqued red hand positioned at an angle, in honor of the missing and murdered Indigenous People, designed by Emma Alcazar. The fourth block has Ellam iinga, or the Eye of Awareness, above a blue ocean wave by Nikki Corbett. The blocks are surrounded by black sashing and a narrow red border. The wide piano keys style outer border with stairstep patterns in brown is "Always Becoming" by Margaret Wood.

I'm back to the seasonal wall hangings for my parents. Not sure when I'll get around to finishing the NMAI quilt, now that I've met the quilt label deadline. 🙃

Looking more closely at the photographs, I think the one at NGA and the one at NMAI are actully two different pieces. The one at NMAI has a higher curve to the bill. So, different versions of the same concept?

Here’s how Raven Steals the Sun was displayed at NMAI
Mounted projecting from a wall is the stylized head of a bird with a red ball held in its beak. Text below it to the left reads: HOW RAVEN STOLE THE SUN The sun figures prominently in Native American ceremonies, creation stories, and art. This sculpture is based on the Tlingit story, "How Raven Stole the Sun”. In the story, Raven releases the sun and the moon from boxes held by a chief. WIPWednesday #Quiltsky! Working on the border for the NMAI quilt. Mountains are done. Took a bit longer as I didn't have brown yardage, was working with jelly roll fabric. Will cut spacers based on mountain height (I never trust my 1/4inch seams) & sew from there.
A stack of fabric mountains for the border of the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian quilt along in honor of America's 250th. The border was designed by Margaret Wood. The mountains are composed of 5 skinny rectangles with the tops of each rectangle in off-white and the bottoms in shades of brown. Middle rectangle has a taller, darker brown section representing the mountain peak. The rectangles on either side are in lighter browns, with roughly equal amounts of off-white & brown. The outer rectangles have even lighter brown, with the brown section being even smaller.

For Indigenous Peoples Day, a strong recommend to visit the outstanding Natl. Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC. The sordid treatment of native Americans throughout the history of this country is shocking and heartbreaking.

WIPWednesday #Quiltsky! Feeling pretty good that I'm caught up on the NMAI blocks. Still need to do the sashing/inner borders, but I'm confident I can easily do that. Can't wait for tomorrow to see the outer border design!
The 4th block in the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian quilt along for America's 250th. Ellam Yua by Nikki Corbett. The quilt block has an off-white tonal background with watery blue fabric in the shape of a wave at the bottom. Above the wave is a circle within a circle design, beginning with a small red circle, with a blue ring around it and a black outer ring with 4 short lines radiating outwards from it. The background is visible between the rings. All pieces are machine appliqued. From the designer: "To me, Ellam Yua represents everything in our world—our past, present, and future. It reminds us that we are all connected to the land, sky, water, and to one another."
