As the cost of chemical fertilisers and pesticides rises, farmers in Uttar Pradesh’s Chitrakoot are increasingly turning to natural and organic farming, with some reporting lower cultivation costs and better returns. The shift comes as the government steps up its push for chemical-free natural farming through the National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF), a centrally sponsored scheme approved in November 2024 with a total outlay of 2,481 crore. The mission aims to reduce farmers’ dependence on externally purchased inputs, improve soil health, restore ecosystems and promote more sustainable and climate-resilient farming practices. The government’s programme has been rolled out through clusters, farmer training, demonstration farms and local resource networks. As of March 5, 2026, 18,786 clusters covering 8.80 lakh hectares had been formed across the country, with 18.19 lakh farmers enrolled under the mission. Uttar Pradesh is among the states where the programme has been implemented on a significant scale. The meeting featured detailed discussions on the expansion of natural farming, farmer registration and certification, soil health management, training, research, market linkages, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), and the socio-economic impacts of natural farming. During the meeting, a presentation was given on the progress achieved so far in natural farming, ongoing activities across states, farmers' participation, and upcoming targets under the mission. The presentation highlighted that currently, over 2.4 million (24 lakh) farmers across the country are engaged in natural farming, and a target has been set to bring 8.5 million (85 lakh) farmers under the National Mission on Natural Farming by 2030. The department of expenditure, under the finance ministry, in coordination with the agriculture ministry, is drafting a proposal to create 65,000 clusters of 50 hectares each under the National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF), the officials said. The targeted 3.25 million hectares would account for about 1.8% of India’s total agricultural land of 180.12 million hectares. At present, around 880,000 hectares are estimated to be under natural farming, indicating a significant scale-up from current levels. For FY27, the department has planned an outlay of ₹750 crore to bring an additional 650,000 hectares under natural farming, said the first official on condition of anonymity. The second official said FY27 targets are indicative, as the full NMNF outlay for FY27–FY31 is yet to be approved. Ecosystem creation The year’s targets include setting up 5,000 bio-input resource centres (BRCs), training 26,000 community resource persons (CRPs), and establishing 2,858 demonstration farms to drive adoption, the officials said. BRCs are local facilities that produce and supply natural farming inputs such as bio-fertilisers, bio-pesticides, compost and microbial solutions.
