This is why Democrats need a platform focused on institutional reform. Having to adopt policy positions opposed by supermajorities of the national public to win the hyper-malapportioned Senate is anti-democratic, & promising policies you can never pass is political suicide.

I really feel like more people need to constructively engage with this! You can think the moderation/centrism discourse is often braindead (as I do!) but the center left really needs a pretty robust convo about what winning, say, an Iowa or Kansas or Texas or Ohio senate seat would look like.

Merits of the EC and how much of a difference it actually makes aside, the NPV interstate compact has real practical nuts-and-bolts problems with how it's drafted, in terms of its inability to handle any kind of dispute or to even have a firm definition of what the NPV is and how it's determined.
I guess the REALLY controversial position is that the structural benefits of abolishing the electoral college aren't necessarily enormous, since most of the time the popular vote winner wins the electoral college too. I mean, we should 100% do it. But 2024 still goes Trump, obviously.

The easiest way to make housing affordable immediately without new building is to hike property taxes, which reduces asset prices by the NPV of the perpetual liability. This also helps young people buy, as they have future income rather than current wealth. Naturally we’re doing the opposite.

Unpopular take: something like the NPVIC would be constitutional, but the version that states have actually been passing is practically unworkable. It provides no meaningful definition of the NPV, how that is to be ascertained, how to deal with ambiguities, or how to decide any disputes.
NEW: Virginia just passed a law to join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, giving it 222 of 270 electoral votes needed to activate.
