Oh yes, we Democrats hate the popular vote. We want all elections to be decided by the electoral college. It’d be a shame if Trump encouraged Republicans to enact the NPVIC. We’d hate it if all elections were decided by the popular vote instead.

And when we flip. legislatures, we can get NPVIC, which invalidates the electoral college without a constitutional amendment.
And don't forget city and county elections. MAGA didn't.
There was also a primary in Charlotte with 7% turnout. Mitch McConnell 1st got elected in KY with 1k ppl voting.

Unpopular take: something like the NPVIC would be constitutional, but the version that states have actually been passing is practically unworkable. It provides no meaningful definition of the NPV, how that is to be ascertained, how to deal with ambiguities, or how to decide any disputes.
NEW: Virginia just passed a law to join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, giving it 222 of 270 electoral votes needed to activate.

As it stands right now, how would NPVIC treat states that use RCV? How would it handle if a state went back to not putting the pres/VP candidates on the ballot, and only the party elector slates? There are rational choices you could make about these things, but they're not in the NPVIC as it stands.

A straightforward question that's totally unanswerable: if the NPVIC had been in place in 1960, who would have won? You get different answers based on how you treat Alabama's weird mixed slate of electors mechanism, and there's no objectively right result.

Moreover, structurally, with all spending bills having to start in the House, the shift in strategy, power, and control will force the Senate to change behavior. And it’s unlikely that the change leaves the EC intact for GOP use again, so just abolish it via the NPVIC.

And the best part is, if SCOTUS says that NPVIC is a “classical” interstate compact requiring Congressional approval, that implies that it also cannot be *withdrawn* from without Congressional approval, subject of course to the veto of a President elected by popular vote.

Theoretically if Democrats win the right governorships in November there's a path to the NPVIC hitting 270.

I think, if we uncapped the House, mandated some form of proportional representation, effectuated 14A2, liberalized voting, added new states, & reconstituted the judiciary, we would not, in fact, be only one election from disaster anymore.
