No they don't! Humans report being conscious half of the time when awoken from NREM sleep.

The NREM/REM, conscious/unconscious dichotomy has been thoroughly debunked.

It's time we stop oversimplifying the relationship between sleep and consciousness!

New paper from our group: using simultaneous EEG-fMRI, we investigated the neural mechanisms underlying individual NREM sleep slow waves. Our findings suggest that slow waves are not a homogeneous phenomenon and may reflect distinct physiological processes.

Thalamic involvement defines distinct slow-wave subtypes in NREM sleep - Communications Biology
Using simultaneous EEG-fMRI, we identify two types of NREM slow waves with distinct thalamic profiles. Large, synchronized waves involve early thalamic activation and arousal markers, whereas smaller ...

Happy to announce our new paper in Nature Communications: rdcu.be/eBpGY
We show how CRH in the thalamic reticular nucleus modulates NREM sleep, helping to understand how stress impacts sleep

Congrats to Loredana Cumpana and team, in work led by Simone Astori!

Corticotropin-releasing hormone modulates NREM sleep consolidation through the thalamic reticular nucleus
Nature Communications - Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), known for activating the HPA axis during stress, also acts centrally in the brain. Here, the authors show that CRH modulates thalamic...

Cool study. More synchrony in NREM sleep, better network desynchrony post-sleep for improved behavioral performance.

NREM sleep improves behavioral performance by desynchronizing cortical circuits
Sleep improves cognitive performance, yet little is known about the neural mechanisms of this improvement. We performed multielectrode recording in macaque visual and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex wh...

Thalamic involvement defines distinct slow-wave subtypes in NREM sleep
Slow waves (0.5-4 Hz) are a key feature of non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) sleep, traditionally believed to arise from neocortical circuits. However, growing evidence suggests that subcortical structure...

Breathing isn't just for oxygen; it’s a rhythmic pacemaker for the sleeping brain.

Our new preprint shows that the respiratory cycle actually gates memory reactivation during NREM sleep! 🧠😴💨

Looking up the Wikipedia page on "Nap" to decide if it's optimal to sleep 26 minutes (nasa style Nrem 1-2 before slow wave kicks in) or 90 (full rem).

so long, gonna ignore the alarm and actually wake up in 3.7 hours with my circadian rhythm all fucked up instead of doing either
