Hypertension during pregnancy, as occurs with preeclampsia, can interfere with fetal growth and require premature delivery. These babies are at increased risk of complications at delivery, hypoglycemia, poor growth, developmental delays, and death. RFK Jr. is hurting babies. #NSNNN

I also do this when describing the size of a newborn’s scrotum when there are hydroceles present. A baseball-sized scrotum is fairly common. #NSNNN

(What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?)

Up to 5% of newborn girls have a period in the first 1-2 weeks after birth as estrogen levels plummet.

About 80% of pediatric hives (urticaria) are caused by infections and not allergies.

50% of podcasts have fewer than 50 regular listeners.

More than 2000 weekly downloads puts you in the top 5%.

The tail is very long. And there is only real funding money in the top slice of the top slice of the top slice, at 20,000+

Apgar is an example of a backronym, where an existing word is turned into an acronym by using its letters for the words of a phrase:

Appearance
Pulse
Grimace
Activity
Respiration

This was done a decade after Dr. Virginia Apgar developed the scoring system for assessing newborn health.

Acoustic guitars used to just be called ‘guitars.’

Then, we invented electric guitars. Oh no.

Which meant saying ‘guitar’ wasn’t clear enough.

So 'guitars' became 'acoustic guitars.'

‘Acoustic guitar’ is an example of a ‘retronym.’

Midline scalp, face, or spinal lesions are always a red flag on a newborn exam as they can be a clue to underlying conditions like spina bifida or an encephalocele. #NSNNN
A 5-week-old boy was brought to the hospital with a painful scalp lump that had been present since birth. On examination, there was a tense, nonpulsatile round mass on the occiput surrounded by a ring of dark, coarse hair. Read the full case details: nej.md/3N4jkgV

The Galant reflex is hit and miss in newborns. I don’t even check for it in healthy babies with good tone. Even in this instructional video you can see how it isn’t easy to demonstrate. Chiropractors should not be allowed to treat babies.

Cone shaped head molding and positional asymmetry of the nose are common after delivery and almost always resolve without intervention, meaning that any asshole can act like they fixed it. Also, a crooked nose doesn’t make breathing/feeding difficult for newborns. #NSNNN

When Carla has her baby on Scrubs, she is taken for emergency section because of a prolapsed umbilical cord. This happens. The baby is taken to the NICU because “the cord was wrapped around the neck”. Nuchal cords are common and very rarely harm the baby. #NSNNN

Recently had a well-appearing term newborn who developed bruising and burst blood vessels in the skin all over her body. Platelets were practically non-existent. What were mom’s platelets you ask? Great question! Normal. Hmmm…#NSNNN

There is not enough info here to determine the cause of death or if the procedure was even to blame. Regardless, tongue ties are extremely overdiagnosed and frenotomy, which is almost always not needed, should never be done by a dentist. #NSNNN

Three findings to point out in this screenshot:

1. Jaundice
2. Erythema toxicum
3. An unproven and laughably implausible treatment modality

We are hoping it is an example of the clumpy nature of random events, but there were 8 families refusing vitamin K for their baby last week. That’s very unusual for our population. There is no downside to this lifesaving medication. None. It saves hundreds of lives every year in the US. #NSNNN

“Ten fingers, ten toes” is something I say out loud when doing a newborn’s first exam in front of parents, most of the time. An extra digit, from a little nubbin to a fully formed and functional finger or toe, is not that unusual, especially in some populations. #NSNNN

I saw a couple babies with spinal dimples recently. These common indentations in the skin over the lower spine are very common and can result in a lot of anxiety when pointed out to parents without proper context. They can be a sign of an underlying problem with the spine but usually aren’t. #NSNNN

No, it isn’t. Congenital muscular torticollis is caused by intrauterine injury to, or maldevelopment of, the sternocleidomastoid muscle and has absolutely nothing to do with tongue ties. PT can be very effective but please see an actual expert. #NSNNN

I see so many videos like this on FB. This one is well-meaning and the 2nd and 3rd items are accurate enough. But the first about spitty babies and how they were delivered is another common example of medical folklore. #NSNNN

What’s wrong with this picture? In a Facebook post scolding parents who swaddle their young infants, which is perfectly fine and often extremely helpful, they have a baby wearing a dangerous and utterly useless amber teething necklace. #NSNNN

Don’t listen to anything a chiropractor or traditional osteopath has to say about newborn medicine. They are the ultimate example of the arrogance of ignorance. #NSNNN

Facebook is a garbage faucet spewing a never ending stream of…well…garbage. Holding a baby upside down for a few seconds isn’t harmful, but it has no benefits. #NSNNN

The confidence exuded when promoting implausible and almost certainly unhelpful medical folklore like burping infants is understandable but unfortunate. Burping is (mostly) a harmless waste of time. I respect parental time that could go towards more beneficial things, like sleeping. #NSNNN

The Newborn Screen is a miracle of modern medicine that has saved or improved the lives of countless children since the 1960s when it began with testing for PKU. As a hospitalist, I rarely find out when a newborn I cared for ended up with a positive result. But they are out there. #NSNNN

New parents tend to ask a lot of questions about the newborn course, especially when it comes to feeding, and I like to give reasonable expectations. But, as I like to tell them, we take care of the baby in front of us not the one in the textbook. #NSNNN

The only correct response to “Isn’t my baby adorable/beautiful/cute/sweet/etc?” is of course that you need to do a thorough physical exam and ask a few important family history questions before making a diagnosis. #NSNNN

This is not how you examine a newborn’s moro reflex. Imagine being a parent and seeing this. And it didn’t even work. That was just a startle as baby did not bring the extended arms towards the midline. #NSNNN
