COVID in wastewater. Another late summer pickup www.cdc.gov/nwss/rv/COVI...
August 29, 2025 at 6:24 PM
Good news: the very low current levels of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater, even in places where the new variants are prevalent (XFG, NB.1.8.1), suggest that any summer wave will be limited, not like previous ones

This Covid surge is now higher than last summer's, and it's showing no signs of peaking yet www.cdc.gov/nwss/rv/COVI...

Flu, RSV, and Norovirus are all surging quickly at the moment, and Covid is seeing increases too according to wastewater readings from BiobotAnalytics, WastewaterSCAN, and NWSS. Be careful out there!

Great to see the major upgrade in CDC wastewater dashboard tracking of SARS-CoV-2 by region, state, variants, and time cdc.gov/nwss/rv/COVI...

WastewaterSCAN suggests that we are at the lowest levels in years... but I am not confident in that claim without ED, NWSS or Biobot data for the few of weeks.

I do miss having 4 data sets to cross compare...

COVID wastewater levels are very high in the majority of U.S. states

Today's CDC update confirms the validity of last week's reported spike in Minnesota. Levels are falling quickly but remain "Very High." 🙃

THREAD 1 of 3
Breaking: The CDC reports SARS-CoV-2 levels *quadrupled* in Minnesota in the past week.

Using harmonized wastewater estimates, we project 1 in 12 people in Minnesota are actively infectious. This is equivalent to a 59% chance of exposure in a room of 10 people....

Goodbye UssZzyzxprise. Hello ElectroZzyzx. I’ll miss the stickers

Just FYI we’re entering a summer Covid wave right now (especially western regions in the US); you can see it in the CDC wastewater plot here (and anecdotally a bunch of my friends are suddenly testing positive). www.cdc.gov/nwss/rv/COVI...

March 10th Update:
After a relatively low transmission winter, we had a long shoulder, but numbers are starting to trend further down. Still elevated in the Midwest and Northeast. NWSS & WWScan:

Estimates:
🔸325,000 new infections/day
🔸~1 in 200 currently infected
March 11, 2026 at 1:18 AM
April 10th Update:

Both NWSS and WWScan data sets suggest the lowest transmission levels in more than 4 years. BA.3.2 (Cicada) modestly impacting primarily the under 18 group.

Estimates:
🔸118,000 new infections/day
🔸~1 in 550 currently reasonably infectious (5 day window)
April 10, 2026 at 11:28 PM
To note, here are some other current trends that do show a slower rise than NWSS. (WWscan, Emergencg Dept Data, Positivity Rates, Walgreens Positivity Rates)

It's a bit unclear what the *exact* trajectory is, probably somewhere in between NWSS/the rest.

The CDC now has a national dashboard for SARS-CoV-2 Wastewater Viral Activity. Upper Midwest is concerning. www.cdc.gov/nwss/rv/COVI... 🧪

March 21st update:

The decline has stuttered over the past couple weeks, and NWSS also re-adjusted a couple of the past values upwards. South and Midwest both at medium levels, W/NE are low. Latest WW estimates:

🔸328,000 new infections/day
🔸~1 in 100 currently infected
March 22, 2025 at 1:19 AM
June 13th update:

Wastewater dipped a bit this week, and NWSS corrected down last week. About tied for lowest in 3 years, though a summer wave is still anticipated.

🔸153,000 new infections/day
🔸~1 in 219 currently infected
🔸~1 in 545 are reasonably infectious

Emergency department and WWScan data showed a more significant decline and a flattening compared to NWSS data, and are more similar to my forecast. What's the true story? Maybe somewhere in between.
