It's too late for this year, but each summer the NYS DEC does a "first time camper" program that provides families who have never gone camping before with camping gear and reservations at a DEC campground. It's by lottery, so if this interests you keep an eye out for next year.

The whole farm has been breathing smoke for days from a neighbor's smoldering bonfire they refuse to put out, we're all having eye and throat irritation, and the NYSDEC refuses to do anything, even though bonfires are illegal in NYS outside of ceremonial purposes.
