Good evening. This is "Gnarled Hickory." It is one of my favorite pieces that I wrote for #NaPoWriMo earlier this year. We were driving home from Mom's and I saw that tree and it made me think of this poem again. Let me know what you think. #poetry #PoetryWithDonnie

An April Fools’ prompt in 2023 asked me to write about a fool.

I chose Christopher Columbus.
Bringing “A Certain Fool” back for Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

He called it discovery. I had other words for his ass.

Oh yeah I got that hella. “Yellow Jacket Venom” started as 2 NaPoWriMo prompts, each a 48 word poem about a joyous and miserable memory with the same person.

Almost didn’t get made because my former bandmate thought it was too weird, now it’s my most popular song internationally

Shawn and I will be celebrating 30 years next month and we started the celebration early. We saw Practical Magic 2 on Saturday and today Shawn bought me roses. This time he actually remembered they were in my bouquet 💐 😉

24 - Franchise
#NaPoWriMo Day 24 and I wrote a piece of free verse inspired by the prompt “an Inconvenience Store”, after something in a conversation with one of my partners sparked the notion. I started riffing on what books in an inconvenience store would be like, and then this poem turned up later. Remember that, if you’re a subscriber to my Patreon, you can hear a recording of this piece (and the twenty-three preceding it) there. The link to the relevant post is here: https://www.patreon.com/fayroberts/posts/franchise-168468340 --- The opening hours are on a rota, operating on base thirteen-and-a-half, and staff aren’t expected to start until half an hour past the advertised time (if you can find it). The push-to-open door is marked Pull, and the chime it summons does so somewhere in the range beyond human hearing, endearing itself to a range of nearby creatures. Every knife is as blunt as your uncle, made up for by the teaspoons, scooping their scalpel way free of all confinement, which is how they hide after purchase. The labels for the food are all in Ge’ez, directions to the exits in Quipu, while the WiFi password changes every 49 minutes, a blend of Tagalog and Tengwar. Welcome to the books section, where nearly every volume is the second of a trilogy, and printed in point 2 or 200, the paper gossamer-thin or thick as vellum. The shopping baskets have one handle each, the trolleys, once you’ve prised one from its mate, have wheels that are distinctly non-Euclidean, myriad, or solo. If you’re interested in opening your own branch of the singular Inconvenience Store, the application forms are comprehensive, and only accessible on Internet Explorer 4. Don’t ask about the bags. Trust us. Oddly enough, I made this one myself. (Yes, there’s an alt-text transcription!)

Maybe I’ll do a 30 for 30 this April. I need to get amass some drafts of poetry fodder. Maybe the challenge will get me going. 🤷‍♂️

Can't believe it's nearly April. What a year!?!? But the upside is that April is NaPoWriMo. Who's doing this? It's my first time, though I did have a go at a different month long poetry challenge a few years ago (didn't get past the first fortnight)

Just learnt that there's a NaPoWriMo in April which sounds like a delightful way to spend April (writing a poem per day for a month)

But what's the use of belief when it changes?

Happy #NaPoWriMo! I'm gonna try my best to write one every day this year...

Here's day one, inspired by a prompt I saw on Instagram to write a poem using only questions!
