The strangest rabbit hole of this episode was learning about Shinichi Watanabe, an anime director who would insert himself directly into his projects as an OC named “Nabeshin”. And not always as a one-off visual gag: he’s practically one of the main characters in Excel Saga!

The new Coco tease for Kingdom Hearts IV last night has left me thinking of my friend Brian "Nabeshin" Jackson, who we sadly lost a few years back. He loved KH and his old twitter account still has the somber, but dark comedy-infused pinned tweet "I died before Kingdom Hearts 4 came out."

it's a Nabeshin adaptation so everything about it is completely and intentionally offensively off base from the source material. there isn't a single work Nabeshin worked on that doesn't evoke the same schadenfreude vibe of "am i, the viewer, the punchline for giving this attention?"
