Today's historic pic: Exactly 38 years ago today, the station nameboard seen from a passing Winton to Hughenden mixed train at Lana, Qld, July 20 1986. Lana was 50km north of Winton on the Hughenden line. Mixed trains have since been withdrawn and the Winton-Hughenden line closed.

Today’s historic pic: An SAR nameboard lies discarded amongst thistles at Hallett Cove, SA, April 10 1985. This original Hallett's Cove station, on the Willunga line, closed in the early 1970s when a new Hallett Cove station opened on the then new line to Hallett Cove Beach.
A station nameboard lying discarded on the ground among dry grass and rocks with a thistle behind it and a vista extending to an oil refinery on a hill in the distance with a glimpse of the sea at right. The nameboard is of the old South Australian Railways style - with large block white letters painted on a black rectangular panel. Large parts of the pain has peeled off the reveal the metal backing of the board, but the name is quite discernible. The original station name was Hallett's Cove (with an apostrophe s) - that is not evident here, but there is a significant space between the words so it is possible this board dates from before the spelling change and the apostrophe s may have been painted over.

Nine years after closure to passengers Fawley signalbox retains its classic Southern Region nameboard. This was taken on a Branch Line Society Railtour and one of the few places we could photograph on the tour thanks to IRA bomb threats.

Today's historic pic: The station at Burradoo, NSW, November 9 1985. Burradoo is in the NSW Southern Highlands south of Bowral, 139km from Sydney on the main South line. The old nameboard has since been replaced, and a Canberra-style 'bunker' bus shelter erected on the up platform on this side.
A double track standard gauge mainline railway runs through a two platform passenger station in a regional location. The platform on the other side is backed by a cyclone wire fence, and has a number of large leafy green trees immediately behind the platform. A large white nameboard with black block letters announces BURRADOO as the station name.
