They can't lay a hand on you, stop you, ask you questions. They can't impede you in any way. Also only the governors of states can call up National Guard so I believe this photo is AI or just opportunistic by chance.

"This specific instance?" Singular? I've seen photos / video of three separate groups of national guard troopers. It's "instances," plural. Do they even have respect for us?

Is this the pitchbot? I mean we have ICE agents shooting into cars with kids, National Guard posing by ballot boxes, and all of the people whose roads may be flooded or homes damaged by Isaias...but what we really should be thinking about is how inconvenient Isaias is for football fans.

Is this the pitchbot? I mean we have ICE agents shooting into cars with kids, National Guard posing by ballot boxes, and all of the people whose roads may be flooded or homes damaged by Isaias...but what we really should be thinking about is how inconvenient Isaias is for football fans.
I suspect this is something that hits a little differently for people who live in DC and those who don't. If I saw National Guard troops standing around at a polling place or ballot drop box or whatever in Minnesota, that'd be alarming. If they were all over the place all the time, less alarming.

These are not ICE (who mostly cover their faces), I think, but National Guard, right? Either way, capable of discouraging lots of kind of people, especially those many with past experience of being brutalized.
