For #NationalHoneyBeeAwarenessDay "The Widow, Clovelly, Telling the Bees," Charles Napier Hemy, 1897.
The bees had to be told or have their skeps draped in black when a member of the household died to prevent the bees from dying or flying away.

Painting of a green farm landscape with houses and trees in the background. A woman in the black dress and white cap of the widow is walking with her arm around her son, who is wearing a sailor suit and wide-brimmed hat, next to the bee skeps. They are "telling the bees" that their master is dead.
