“Depicting a cockerel in determined pursuit of a hen within a heart-shaped frame of vines, this is a humorous and charming love token, perhaps offering an an interpretation of the proverb ‘the cock croweth but the hen delivereth the egg’. Wilhelm Lucas von Cranach (1861-1918) was an artist, interior decorator and highly individual designer of jewellery based in Berlin. His work relates closely to the Art Nouveau style prevalent in Paris and Brussels, and he exhibited at the Paris Exposition of 1900. Known for his jewelled serpents and winged creatures, this charming, domestic scene offers a more light-hearted aspect of his work.” “PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION Two branches of an enamelled gold vine are arranged into a delicate and approximately heart-shaped frame. Within is a cockerel formed from a pinkish-brown irregular pearl in pursuit of a white hen which is likewise formed around an irregular pearl. The vine branches are adorned with enamelled clusters of grapes, leaves set with demantoid garnets, three tiny rubies at the top, and rose-cut diamonds set into the cut ends. “The rooster is a rare shape and may not have any references beyond its similarity in shape to the peacock & its associations with sunrise - the start of daylight.”

They were made predominantly in terracotta, but many examples in bronze survive because of their durability. Artists drew inspiration from all aspects of ancient culture, from the mythological realm, illustrated by a lamp with a griffin-head handle in the Dumbarton Oaks collection (BZ.1962.15), to the natural world, reflected in this rooster lamp. Identified by its distinctive coxcomb & wattles, the head is tipped forward at an angle that is typical of this barnyard bird. The feathers on the body are chased (i.e. incised after the lamp was cast). A hinged lid on the rooster’s back was used to fill the lamp with oil & the nozzle at the end of the tail feathers is where the wick burned. Although the lamp can stand on its own round foot, it has an interior sheath to fit onto a pricket & to be supported on a lampstand.” (Dumbarton Oaks)

This one, published posthumously in the Meiji period (1868-1912), also contains a table of content in English. It indicates that the book might be intended for display at World Expositions. In the 1880s and 1890s, the japanese government promoted the development of traditional arts in order to create a robust export market with the West. Illustrated books such as this one gave potential Western consumers a variety of designs for individual prints and other commodities. Images such as Ito Sozan's Family of Chickens in this exhibition were likely adapted from such illustrated books that served as design templates for print designers.
