It's both #NationalIllustrationDay *and* #NationalTreeWeek! I've been looking back at 'Into The Forest' lately, so here's a couple of my favourite spreads from it, from the part of the book about the Amazon rainforest. 💚

To celebrate #NationalTreeWeek, a team from Prysmian came out to plant trees in Gifford Community Woodland. They planted 120 native broadleaved trees, contributing to East Lothian's Climate Forest creation target of 2 million trees by 2031.

“Many a tree is found in the wood
And every tree for its use is good:
Some for the strength of the gnarled root,
Some for the sweetness of flower and fruit;
Some for a shelter against the storm,
And some to keep the hearthstone warm”

Fagus, the genus name for the beech, comes from a Greek word meaning to eat, perhaps due to the popularity of beechnuts with pigs. In austere times beechnuts were valued as a source of vegetable oil, and children were given special holidays to gather them. #FairytaleTuesday #NationalTreeWeek

The holly “bears its crown” in December. Its snow-white flowers that transform into the bright red berries we associate with Christmas make it one of the birth flowers for those born this month. In folklore holly is associated with immortality, life and rebirth. #NationalTreeWeek

As #NationalTreeWeek ends so the tree planting season begins. If you have room in your garden or green space at work, could you plant a tree (or two)? The Oxfordshire-based International Tree Foundation has a great guide to planting trees (and caring for them). https://orlo.uk/npPv0

We’re encouraging tree planting through our grants. Last year we gave funding to an orchard at Cuddesdon and Denton (pictured) through our environment grant and our councillor community grant. You can apply for similar planting projects (see links in comments).
