#NationalWeekWithoutDriving Day 6: back on the bus to take my girls to their dojo. 🥷🥷🚍

Day 3 of #NationalWeekWithoutDriving. Waking up to a government shutdown. I’m married to an essential federal worker, so he still has to work, and pay Metro fares, but we don’t know when he will next get paid.

I’m already on trip 2 of the day. Lots of people still working hard in DC no matter what.

Walking to the bus stop to catch @wmata.com to school

Day 4 of #NationalWeekWithoutDriving: we made the bus with no running, yelling, trips back, or detours! Today is the first day that last year’s Kids Ride Free cards won’t work for DC schoolchildren. Make sure to pick up your new cards at school!

Last day of #NationalWeekWithoutDriving: starting off by biking to church. My youngest just learned and now she wants to bike EVERYWHERE.

The real secret to getting places on time with kids, in fact we were 10 minutes early #NationalWeekWithoutDriving

Good morning! I am waking up to #NationalWeekWithoutDriving in a hotel in downtown Rochester, NY. It’s built on a former parking lot redeveloped as part of the removal of the east segment of the Inner Belt highway. Healing Rochester from urban renewal will take decades, but it can be done.

Day 2 of #NationalWeekWithoutDriving. We love our pediatrician, but her office is way out in Montgomery County. So this morning, I piled the kids in the car and drove them. I find parenting stuff often pushes me into the car - even though ironically my kids hate riding and always beg to bike.

Needed to get from my office to somewhere else in downtown in 10 minutes, so I took a #Lime scooter. DC’s downtown is kind of spread out because our buildings are short. Bike and scooter share has transformed DC and cut many of my travel times in half. I love it!

Only four hours late, we are finally heading to school via Metrobus! Already my third trip of the day. #NationalWeekWithoutDriving

It’s 5:30! Slamming the laptop shut and enjoying this perfect weather at the bus stop on the way to get my girls. Can’t wait to hear all about their days while we ride home together. #NationalWeekWithoutDriving

Metrorail to my office was fast, but now I’m sitting next to the cafeteria window watching many of my coworkers arrive by bike - and one just RAN up! I used to bike everywhere, I wonder if I could get back to that given my kid transport needs.

I’m WFH today, so after dropping the girls I crossed the street to get a bus home. I’m lucky to live in a place where I can get a train or a bikeshare if the next bus is too far. Parking is pretty annoying in my nabe so that tends to motivate me to choose other modes.

Third trip: ✈️ ROC -> IAD. One of my secrets to #NationalWeekWithoutDriving (and every other week)? Pack light.

Happy #NationalWeekWithoutDriving to all who celebrate

So...how do we convert things like this (which includes bike to work day) into consistent behavior change?

Better service/infrastructure are givens. But how else can we capitalize on events that expose folks to non-auto ways of getting around?

I am now racing to work (not ideal how much I am sweating) to make a 1 pm meeting. I could hear the train leaving the station as I hit the escalator. 4 years ago that would have made my stress hit the roof. Now, Metro has an all-day frequent service pattern. Game changer. #NationalWeekWithoutDriving

I get to ride for free because I’m on the board of @wmata.com. So sometimes I do lazy stuff like jump on a bus to turn a 20 minute walk into a 2-stop ride 🤪

Now @wmatagm.bsky.social knows how I get my amazing annual ride stats 🤣

Final trip of the day: caught a ride home from a board meeting with a colleague. I am a carpool manifestor. #NationalWeekWithoutDriving

Second trip of the day: ridehail to the airport. The headway on the airport bus is 30 min, and it’s a local. Even tho the airport is only 5 mi away, transit could not get me there in time. Given 24% of Rochester households don’t have a car, transit seems starved here.

Another secret - the collapsible wagon. We went to and from the store this afternoon, got pumpkins, carved in a neighbor’s yard, and came home, all in this chariot. #NationalWeekWithoutDriving

First trip of the day, walking across downtown Rochester. Notes:

1) I’ve seen office conversions all over the US. Rochester has some of the coolest entries for the office-to-everything files I have seen yet

2) Pedestrian beg button: thanks, I hate it

3) More river pls

Walked to happy hour, and now heading home (Metrorail). A guy followed me through the faregates by “tailgating” to not pay the fare. It was scary. The current Metro Lift program is tied to SNAP but is that really workable moving forward? #NationalWeekWithoutDriving

One of the explicit goals of #NationalWeekWithoutDriving, of course, is to highlight the challenges that nondrivers face on a daily basis

But we should also see it as an opportunity to showcase the appeal of transportation options. I'd argue that's more important than highlighting problems

Every week is #NationalWeekWithoutDriving, but no, not really. Being honest: This week I need a car for: watching Labyrinth on the lawn of the city art museum, going to see my friends' kid's marching band, and bringing cats to the vet. Public transit doesn't do it -- (hybrid) car it is then.
