This oak was already old when they cut sandstone from this hillside in the 1800s and she survived it. The woodland around her is 150 years of succession on spoil. She'll outlast whatever comes next. Plant trees. Not because it fixes anything. Because continuity matters.

The low horizontal trunk of a veteran oak, moss-covered along its entire length, reaching out over ferns and woodland floor. She grew this way when there was open sky here. That was before the quarry. A veteran pedunculate oak, trunk fully carpeted in moss from root flare to crown fork, standing on a former sandstone quarry in Lancashire. The woodland around her is 150 years of succession. She was here before any of it.
