Bloody Garmin: a callous disregard for their customers’ circumstances and safety.

Navionics Has Removed All Charts For Southeast Asia Creating A Dangerous Situation for Boaters
This is a special message to let everyone know that as of July 1st Navionics / Garmin have removed all of the charts for the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia essentially stranding boaters who have long used their apps with no way to navigate these dangerous waters. A postscript: in the summer of 2024, a team of divers confirmed a wreck off Rubha a' Mhail. It's about the right size and in the right place to be the Vivid.
I hope somebody, at some point, takes a look inside for the rusting frame of that piano.

On the nautical chart front, there’s might be some issues that folks using Navionics might want to look into. The whole subscription-based chart programs are, at best, problematic.

Just north of Kingsland Bay in a favorite spot. Needs a heavy anchor and chain, shale bottom. No wind tonight so we can stay. Very private because it’s not on Navionics or AquaMaps. A little beach and woods to roam.

Shakedown cruise complete! First time sailing in two years and hot damn it feels good.
Navionics says we did about 11 NM, and hit a top speed of around 7 kts. Considering my old boat has a hull speed of 8 kts, I'd say that's pretty good.
Winds aren't as good Sunday but I'll try and get back out.

Out of curiosity a while back I pulled up the Navionics Webb app and looked at the charts roughly where the Edmund Fitzgerald went down and hoooooooly shit that lake is INSANELY deep. Everything involved in that story is way bigger than most people realize.

However, for the Southern Gulf Islands I can mostly navigate and predict current and tide visually now without aids.
