#FrescoFriday the tomb of Nebamun, an accountant from Karnak. It dates from c1350 BC. The hunting scene in particular is extraordinary; the detail on the birds is so life like, you’d think a 17th century Dutch painter did it

After thirty years it has suddenly occurred to me that Ace's slightly stiff stance, as she swings her sword down on the robot Ant, is probably supposed to echo the very famous scene of Nebamun hunting in the marshes.

Paid a visit to Nebamun and family. Let's face it, I went to see his cat. (Same vibes with my living friends, tbh.) Nebamun's fowling expedition to the marshes is up there with the liveliest art in #Egyptology, but is more occurring here than N's aspirations for eternal country pursuits? During 1/

My favorite portrait of a cat is from a wall painting in the Tomb of Nebamun from ancient Thebes (Luxor), #Egypt. The family cat has joined his master Nebamun and his mistress Hatshepsut on a hunt in the marshes and has done spectacularly well. 🐈 1/

Closeup of the wall painting depicting the fowl hunt in the marshes. The colors are spectacularly vivid. Here, the orange tabby cat stands on papyrus stalks, which bend almost down to the ground; the cat has two birds under his front and rear paws, and its head is arched back with a wading bird’s wing in its mouth. Surrounding the cat are additional birds, several butterflies, papyrus, lotus, and his master’s bare legs. You can also just see the small daughter of Nebamun sitting on the ground, her hand wrapped around his forward-striding leg. The red ochre pigment dominates, but the papyrus is an Egyptian blue mixed with some green, and the cat is orange with yellow, while the wading bird in the cat’s jaws is mostly yellow, with a red head and white and black wings. Nebamun was a rich accountant in the Temple of Amun at Thebes c.1350BC. His tomb was decorated with these beautiful frescoes showing how he wanted to spend eternity. The detail of the wildlife is particularly extraordinary
