Tuesday Night at The Shelter

Lea puts down her meager
belongings next to a cot
& looks ‘round at the others
seeking a warming lifeline.

She gets needed food & sleep
under protective eyes of
station staff—some just a few
paydays from needing cots too.

Kit’s broken & I have to
remember this… & that no one
is beyond redemption, right?

Because as she rails against
our shelter that provides for her,
& insults staff that tries to

help, I recall my mother’s
favorite often quoted, “There, but
for the grace of God, go I.”

Neal Cassady called
it the “hobo jungle” &
heartfelt terms push along
the softer “unhoused”—

I ask Frank whose been
‘homeless’ almost a decade.
Behind Walmart smoking,
he shrugs, “I’m just cold.”
