Neopragmatism about Logical Necessity: Towards a Metasemantics for Possible Worlds - Topoi
Neopragmatist treatments of a domain of discourse eschew inflationary semantic notions, such as heavyweight representation relations, in favor of functional explanations. Neopragmatists often do this by providing an alternative, non-truth-conditional semantics for the discourse in question. This paper develops a neopragmatist treatment of logical necessity that pursues a different approach. It accepts a truth-conditional possible-worlds semantics, but provides a metasemantic account that appeals only to neopragmatist-friendly notions. The success of possible-worlds semantics is explained not by its correctly capturing representational structure, but by a functional explanation: a crucial function of logical modals is to express commitments to rules that govern all language games. I provide a formal explication that highlights the isomorphism between the semantic quantification over possible worlds and the metasemantic quantification over language games. The resulting account also explains what logical necessity has in common with other flavors of modality and secures the hardness of the logical “must”.

Overintellectualization tends to come in when existence of pragmatic facts are denied, imo. Hence, classical pragmatism-influenced thinker to neopragmatism-influenced thinker, I was throwing some pragmatic exs at Phillip, incl one from the interface of cl. pragm. & roots of care ethics via Addams.
Democracy & Social Ethics isn't overintellectualized. Which is quite possibly why it has historically been so tragically over-looked in intellectual circles. Is it about guiding individual decisions? Yes. Won't try summarize it here, but it's a pragmatic, observe & revise, rather than virtue ethics.

That’s where I’d put the demarcation, if anywhere, too (although in a way that explicitly captures related neopragmatism elsewhere).

i think my recent interest in neopragmatism/ironist liberalism is a response to how bleak everything is. maybe i should be more imaginative but i think people need coherent narrative and the liberal project can still be that. i fear this is quirk chungus, everything-everywhere-all-at-once-coded tho

A new intro, since I seem to be getting some new followers: I work on neopragmatism and 4E cognitive science. Politically, liberal socialism w/ some Frankfurt School & degrowth communism.
