¡Qué guay! No sabía que eran cuñados. Estoy investigando un poco más (las que vimos estaban en un libro de Cambridge) y parece que también checkmate y PARADISE, que desplazó a la inglesa ¡¡¡NEORXNAWANG!!!.

Weird linguistic fact I just learned: "Paradise" displaced a native Anglo-Saxon word for the same concept, "Neorxnawang." "Wang" is "vang" as in "Folkvang," my username, and means "field." But no one has any idea what the fuck "neorxna" means.

imo the nicest english word is "neorxnawang" which ælfric of eynsham used in his translation of genesis to refer to the edenic paradise. it is likely, however, that the word itself had prechristian roots & originally described an afterlife concept from earlier germanic religions.

The -wang element means field! It also turns up in one of the Old English words for heaven/paradise, 'neorxnawang'.

Old English word for paradise/where the virtuous dead go
August 27, 2025 at 1:56 AM
Once again reminded that the Old English word adopted after Christianization for paradise is Neorxnawang

And as an atheist Latinist I’ve gotten great at honoring the emotional gravity of Christian texts for their authors—

But Christianity is NEVER gonna live down Neorxnawang!

I have had some fun plot bunnies about this that would involve Éowyn getting to use her newfound healing skills and the Old English word "neorxnawang."

Yes the author says "By contrast another Germanic idea, that of a post mortem existence in the green meadows of the other world can be deduced from the
use of the Old English term neorxnawang for the Christian paradise."

Exhausted from working in maze of hope,
forever running fast against the clock
to gain power and wealth in game of death,
I journey outside gates of paradise
to seek salvation in Neorxnawang,
heavenly meadow of rejuvenation.
