The capped heron is a water bird endemic to the neotropics, inhabiting rainforest from the center of Panama to the south of Brazil. It is the only species of the genus Pilherodius, and one of the least known of the heron family, Ardeidae.

One of my favorite insects to find when I visit the neotropics is leaf-mimicking katydids from the Pterochrozinae subfamily. Not only they are convincing in their leaf mimicry, but many species like this Cycloptera also reveal beautiful fluorescent patterns in UV light!

New publication from my lab: Vampyrum spectrum, the Neotropics' largest carnivorous bat, is very cooperative. These gentle apex predators regularly provide prey for family member – documented in the wild for the first time.
