Charley Toorop was 34 when she painted this self portrait. She has portrayed herself as a confident woman. She was then the mother of three children, separated from their father and busy building a career as a painter. She had just found her definitive style – a straightforward realism with powerful accents and this is her first self portrait in this manner. – Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen
