Nach Auszählung fast aller Stimmen liegt sie mit rund 27 von 150 Sitzen vor der rechtspopulistischen Partei, Partij voor de Vrijheid (PVV), von Geert Wilders, die nur noch 26 Mandate erzielte. Damit verliert Wilders deutlich an Rückhalt, nachdem seine PVV 2023 noch stärkste Kraft gewesen war. Für D66 ist das Ergebnis ein „historischer Sieg“. Erstmals in ihrer Geschichte wird sie stärkste Partei. Jetten kündigte an, rasch eine stabile Regierung „der breiten Mitte“ zu bilden. Die Wählerinnen und Wähler hätten genug von Spielchen, sagte er, und erwarteten nun von den Parteien konstruktive Zusammenarbeit. Mit weniger als 17 Prozent der Stimmen hat erstmals eine Partei mit so geringem Anteil den Wahlsieg errungen. Das ist ein Beleg dafür, wie vielfältig und zugleich zersplittert die niederländische Politik geworden ist. Die Wahlbeteiligung lag bei 78 Prozent. Für eine Mehrheit sind mindestens vier Parteien im Parlament nötig. Für D66 gelten die Christdemokraten Christen-Democratisch Appèl (CDA) und die rechtsliberale Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie (VVD) als mögliche Koalitionspartner. Eine weitere Partei wird jedoch benötigt, um die Mehrheit im Parlament zu erreichen. Noch etwa 90000 ausstehende Briefwahlstimmen dürften vor allem D66 zusätzlich stärken, weshalb Jetten mit dem Auftrag zur Regierungsbildung rechnet. Die Neuwahl war nötig geworden, nachdem im Juni 2025 die rechtskonservative Vier-Parteien-Koalition zerbrochen war. Um die Koalition zu ermöglichen, hatte Wilders auf das Amt des Premierministers verzichtet. Es übernahm der parteilose Sicherheits- und Verwaltungsexperte Dick Schoof. Nach nur elf Monaten provozierte Wilders den Bruch. Neuwahlen folgten am 29. Oktober 2025. Wilders weigert sich bislang, die Niederlage anzuerkennen. Auf der Plattform X warf er den Medien Arroganz vor und verbreitete unbelegte Vorwürfe über Wahlbetrug. Die Behörden fanden keine Hinweise auf Unregelmäßigkeiten.
