A Valentine created by an individual whose identity is currently unknown to us, who was compelled to live at Netherne Hospital c.midC20th.
This was made for art therapist Edward Adamson & is signed “the Netherne noodles” presumably a nickname for one of the groups who attended the art therapy studio

We are able to date this painting to October 1949 and to attribute its creation to an individual who was compelled to live at Netherne hospital, identified only by the surname Owers

When Gwyneth Rowlands left Netherne hospital after thirty years, she wrote a document called Foxhunting, which she described as “my commentary on my life & stones.”
It combines an extraordinary account of her life before Netherne with poetry & literature richly illustrated by paintings & photographs

For the 1st time, Art as Healing is available online from Bethlem Museum of the Mind.
It centres Edward Adamson’s voice rather than the individuals compelled to live at Netherne hospital but it’s still fascinating with great photos of the work they created

George Buday continued creating many illustrations for The Radio Times amongst other commercial publications while living voluntarily at Netherne Hospital, working from his studio in an old summerhouse in the grounds, which was apparently full of cigarette smoke & blaring classical music

I’ve completed a PhD about it & as chair of The Adamson Collection trust, we work to secure permanent homes for the remaining sculptural works which do not have them yet, raise awareness of the collection & the experiences of the individuals compelled to live a Netherne who created it
