The article discusses the growing public sentiment in Australia against the Sydney Roosters ahead of the NRL grand final against the Newcastle Knights. The author, Dane Eldridge, argues that the Knights have captured the nation's imagination and are receiving overwhelming support, positioning them as the underdogs despite the Roosters' historical success. The Knights' journey from a wooden spoon last year to a grand final appearance has resonated with fans, contrasting with the Roosters' perceived elitism and financial dominance. The article highlights the Knights' ability to attract widespread support through their underdog story, their connection with fans, and their recent on-field success, including a stirring preliminary final win over Penrith. The Roosters, backed by wealthy owner Nick Politis, are portrayed as the unpopular choice, with the author suggesting that the emotional support for the Knights will reach a crescendo similar to the 2009 Parramatta Eels' surge. The piece also touches on the Knights' financial struggles compared to the Roosters' resources, their ability to attract talent, and the significance of their fanbase, which remains loyal even during poor performances. The author concludes that the Roosters should be 'running scared' due to the intense public sentiment against them, with the grand final becoming more than just a sporting event but a cultural moment reflecting broader societal preferences.
