Points that were echoed this week at both the Naval War College Foundation's Newport National Security Symposium and the #NewportGlobalSummit.
The Pentagon’s procurement process is “mind-numbingly bureaucratic,” writes Doug Beck. “To keep America safe in an increasingly dangerous world,” the U.S. government must start rewarding risk-taking:

Fascinated by the convergence of two very distinct trends. 1) the upward tick in the ages of people deemed combat-eligible (reports are the average of a Ukrainian soldier is now in the mid-40s). 2) Based on several years' worth of attending the #NewportGlobalSummit ... 1/

One reason I look forward to #NewportGlobalSummit is it validates this point from Djoomart Otorbayev: "Private capital does not invest to satisfy political slogans. It follows profitability, technological competitiveness and market demand."

My sense from sideline conversations at both #NewportGlobalSummit and Naval War College Foundation #Natsec symposium is that there is no longer trust in a market invisible hand that automatically aligns with U.S. interests, so some degree of alignment is required.

Based on the of the presentations at #NewportGlobalSummit in recent years on possible breakthroughs in life extension, not as far fetched as it sounds
“.. Quite a hot mic moment on CCTV in Beijing today as Putin and Xi, both 72 years old, are caught casually talking about living to 150 and maybe forever thanks to organ transplants. (As picked up by Bloomberg.)”

Presented this morning at #NewportGlobalSummit followed by @PeterZwack discussing the transitory phase in world affairs we are living through and how old relationships are eroding.
As I assess the long-term direction of U.S. foreign policy, it does seem that the central organizing principle is shifting to prioritizing partnerships based on access to raw materials, technology infrastructure, energy, and components. 1/ #NewportGlobalSummit

A point heard both at the #NewportGlobalSummit and the Naval War College Foundation's Newport National Security Symposium is that investors are getting skittish at making long term commitments if the terms are up for review every two years due to the electoral cycle. www.politico.com/news/2026/08...
