I don't know what it means that young people go to newsfluencers for the news, or that the newsfluencers are themselves reliant on newsrooms and wire services, or that the paradigm shift is all centered around a technology stack with major chokepoints of billionaire/government control

Very important in these media times to distinguish between independent journalists who do real reporting, and newsfluencers who repackage others’ work. It’s right to direct people to seek reporters with frontline sources, and wrong to smear independent journalists ly lumping us in with pretenders
Believe it or not, independent journalists can get our own frontline sources.
It’s old-fashioned to defend mainstream journalism these days but some of the most reliable reporting from people actually on the ground will be the AP and Reuters the next 24 hours. Your Substack journalist writing takes will be using frontline reporting from them.

I've had so many conversations about this over the years. I went to college for photojournalism, and we had to take classes on ethics and law, among other things, that newsfluencers just don't get.
i say this with nothing but love for all of you to whom this applies, but the moral rot in elite journalism is because journalism is a trade and it should be done by tradespeople and instead it's been professionalized in a way that makes it cozy to capital instead

Shame on NPR for treating digital media journalist “newsfluencers” like they aren’t reporting real events we deserve to know. “Newsfluencers” as you call them deliver more truth to the American public than NPR has in my 36 years. You’re losing touch and it doesn’t suit you. Do better.

It appears that pretty much all Hong Kong-based newsfluencers, even those with international bylines or appearances, got a memo within the last 12 hours that they should shut up about the deadly fire, or else face consequences.

I can't answer this with the data I have at the moment. Just to note, it's useful to not always see Russia's direct/active hand - and instead reflect on how domestic newsfluencers/producers are fully capable of creating/exacerbating info disorders as graduates, if you will, of a Kremlin template.
