They had to shut Beatstar down because its developer, NextBeat, was largely acquired by Duolingo, which led to most of the development team moving over to Duolingo. As a result, NextBeat was left with only six staff members struggling to continue running the game. Due to this and the suspension of plans to raise funding for further expansion, they made the tough decision to permanently shut down the Beatstar servers on October 31, 2025. The shutdown includes stopping all development, and once the servers close, the game will no longer be accessible. Refunds are being offered for recent in-app purchases, but there are no plans to sell the game or keep it running through private servers. The decision was made with sadness, acknowledging the strong community that grew around the game over its four years of life
