Plenty of other questions about UCYN-A and its algal host remain unanswered and the team also plans to figure out UCYN-A and the alga operate and study different strains. Further study of nitroplasts could also determine if they are present in other cells and what their benefits

Merry Christmas to all endosymbionts: mitochondria, chloroplasts, nitroplasts, the whole gang 🎄🦠
Scientists Re-Create the Microbial Dance That Sparked Complex Life | Quanta Magazine
Evolution was fueled by endosymbiosis, cellular alliances in which one microbe makes a permanent home inside another. For the first time, biologists made it happen in the lab.

Summary:
There was a new type of organelle discovered during covid called nitroplasts.
It was previously believed that only prokaryotes could fix nitrogen, but there are nitrogen fixing eukaryotes as well.

Recently, the discovery of nitroplasts was announced. Nitroplasts formed 100 million years ago and fix nitrogen.

There are now 4 known organelles formed by absorbing another cell.

Does that make it less rare? Or does it tell us something else?

Final day of the conference! Jonathan Zehr on nitroplasts, N2-fixing cyanobacterial endosymbionts in an alga, turned an organelle with its division synchronized with other organelles. PSI is involved in N2 fixation. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Why Am I Interested in Nitroplasts?

On Feb. 21, 2017 for Darwin Day, Nick Lane spoke about mitochondria. He mentioned that, at that time, there were only 2½ examples of a cell turning another cell into an organelle: mitochondria, chloroplasts, and maybe one that was in the process.

I bet something cool with nitroplasts will come along. Or laser eyes. Whatevs.

My pick from the list

A novel organelle, the nitroplast discovered in the marine alga Braarudosphaera bigelowii. "this finding and related work hint at the possibility of future crops endowed with nitroplasts that would enable them to fertilize themselves."

Question: the blurb refers to the 4th case, the article describes three (mitochondria, chloroplasts, nitroplasts.)

What's the missing one?

Chloroplasts are great but not as popular as mitochondria. The chloroplast-like thing I still have to look up.

Nitroplasts are in every ocean and important to fixing nitrogen, but...they're ok.

What if forming organelle-like things is powerful, not rare?

green plants that can make food from the sun.

With this latest endosymbiosis event, it’s possible that the algae is converting nitrogen from the atmosphere into ammonia that it can use for other cellular processes. However, it needs the help of a bacterium.

I must be a fool to disagree with Nick Lane. He's brilliant. I'm...me. I read his books. I haven't written mine. Yet.

But it's 2024 and I know about Nitroplasts.

Don't get me wrong. Evolving mitochondria was difficult, and may have taken multiple tries.

Chloroplasts gave up market share (ecological niches) to a competitor, but not by much. Not quite the killer app.

Nitroplasts? They're good, but don't upset the market terribly.

What else is lurking in the ocean with some sort of ok organelle? I bet there's more.
