In front of the Atomic Bomb Dome. Visited Hiroshima Peace Memorial Day to pray for peace. At 8:15 am on 6 August 1945, an Atomic Bomb was used against civilians for the first time in human history. This building, just 160m from the hypocentre, partially survived. It’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In Japan, it's often called a “negative heritage” for peace. Designed by Czech architect Jan Letzel, it originally had a Neo-Baroque structure with Secession-style details. Its dome once stood about 25m tall. An atomic bomb is not just a “big bomb.”

At the Genpei Pond in Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine. Lush green lotus leaves spread out across the water. In Buddhism, the lotus flower is a symbol of entering Nirvana. Today is the Day of Remembrance for the End of World War II and the Memorial Ceremony for the War Dead in Japan. May our wishes for peace reach far and wide.

Near the sea of Ishigaki Island, Okinawa. Today is Okinawa Memorial Day in Japan. The Battle of Okinawa began on 1 April with a US landing and ended on 23 June. More than 200,000 lives were lost—1 in 4 Okinawans. It’s a public holiday in Okinawa to remember those who died and to pray for peace. Looking at the turquoise sea and sky, I hope from my heart that no more blood or tears are shed, no matter what country we live in.
