The 2025 Bee Course wrapped up on Sunday after 10 amazing days of lab & field work in the Chiricahua Mountains in AZ.

We collected bees representing about 42 genera of bees! This is Holcopasites (prob. H. minimus) I collected during the course. 🐝 👀 ♥️

Next up in the #native Nomadinae -- a male Notch-backed Cellophane Cuckoo #Bee (Epeolus scutellaris) on Rudbeckia hirta. Like others in the same group, these are #kleptoparasites, but specialize on cellophane bees (Colletes spp.). #backyard #garden #biodiversity #YorkRegion 🇨🇦

Another in the kleptoparasitic Nomadinae -- a male #native Autumnal Cellophane-cuckoo #Bee (Epeolus autumnalis) feeding on New England Aster. As the common name suggests, these fly only in September here in #YorkRegion 🇨🇦 #backyard #garden #biodiversity

Moving on with the #garden #bee list - time to look at the Nomadinae = cuckoo & nomad bees! 1st up is a Typical Nomad Bee (Nomada ruficornis sp. group, prob. N. maculata - Spotted Nomad) on fleabane. All in this subfamily are #kleptoparasites on other bees. #backyard #biodiversity #YorkRegion 🇨🇦

One last member of the local Nomadinae before moving on to more #garden #bees. This one remains a mystery - iNat.ca originally came up w Complex Nomada erigeronis (feeding on Erigeron sp. is a clue!), but no confirmation. Possibly N. articulata? #backyard #biodiversity #YorkRegion 🇨🇦

I’m getting stuck now going round in circles. I believe this is nomadinae, nomad bee, but which one? North Norfolk UK @norfolknats.bsky.social can you help please? What are the identifying pointers?

Cuckoo bee is kind of funny as a category because many different distantly related species have converged on the same strategy of brood parasitism, some are types of bumblebees and some are kind of their own thing in the subfamily Nomadinae

This is a cuckoo bee, subfamily Nomadinae, which gets its name from the notorious(?) bird, because it does the, Here have some extra kids things! This photo is one of my better ones, I’d say. Please be kind to your bees.
