Key difference - you can’t see cell phone data. It’s nonpublic digital data about your movement. You have a reasonable expectation of privacy. A license plate is visible to everyone when you drive. There’s no expectation of privacy. Anyone, including the cops, can snap a picture.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of a consumer in DeKalb, Illinois. According to the lawsuit, he frequently visits McDonald’s and orders a Quarter Pounder with cheese, french fries and a Coke. The lawsuit said the consumer noticed price differences between McDonald’s stores near his home.
