Has owning anything to do with love?
At least I know who possesses this landscape —
the man who loves it.”
from Norman MacCaig's
‘A Man In Assynt’
Norman MacCaig (1910-1996) was born in Edinburgh and was educated at the Royal High School, and the University of Edinburgh
Trim and dandy – in square miles of bracken
And bogs and boulders a tiny work of art,
Bright as an illumination on a monkish parchment."

The air with heron, finds its height and goes,
A spear between two clouds. A cliff receives it
And it is gargoyle.”

A little insect, constructed like a man,
Crawls on a foot-wide thread on a web that catches
Only a space with a cloud in it. A crane”

a top branch broke off
on the biggest tree in my garden.
It's still up there. Though its leaves
are withered black among the green
the living branches
won't let it fall.

I can feel myself now, trying to throw stones, but they cling to my hands and find their way into my pockets until all I want to do is walk into the surf.
