Yesterday was tone holes night 🕳️

Northumbrian Smallpipes chanter held between centers on a lathe. An end mill bit is mounted on a flex shaft rotary tool and cut holes into the chanter. Northumbrian Smallpipes with all tone holes drilled: 7 in the front and one in the back.

Anyone else out there have a bagpipe cat who sits on their lap every time they try to play?

I suspect it's a non-too- subtle way to tell me to stop that awful noise.

I’m back to working with wood after a week on brass tooling.

#NorthumbrianSmallpipes #bagpipes #bagpipemaking
Piece of wood held between a chuck and a steady rest on a metal lathe. The piece is bored and right by the hole we can see the D-bit that made it. The bit is held in the Jacobs chuck in the tail stock.

I just finished boring a blank for an F chanter in Bolivian rosewood. Not too bad. Next: reaming.

1” rod of about 12” length. The wood is dark brown with black lines. A hole in the rod shows where the bit came in. A hole, slightly off center, shows where the bit came out.

I can't believe how much progress I'm making on the #Northumbriansmallpipes after having started them only two months ago. I can now play a few songs reasonably smoothly and few more haltingly. Amazing Grace is my smoothest, with Chevy Chase, and Somewhere over the Rainbow.
