Black-and-white close-up of the jagged, weathered upper edge of a tree stump. Uneven splinters rise into irregular peaks resembling a distant city skyline. The foreground wood is softly blurred, while the darker broken edge stands against a broad, featureless grey background. The composition echoes the silhouette of New York skyscrapers. Ilse Bing's 1936 black-and-white photograph New York Skyline. Manhattan's skyscrapers form a dark, uneven silhouette across the waterfront, with taller towers near the centre and a bridge extending to the right. Open water occupies the foreground beneath a pale, hazy sky.
