We had been dry for the previous couple of days and most of the other fungi found that day were a bit desiccated, so the gooey insides was surprising.

It looks like this had grown up into a stem or something that made that impression. This is how I found it on the trail. I assumed it wouldn't be super fresh but definitely not as gooey as I found it. I was surprised there weren't many critters under there chomping away. The gills almost look like they were melted together in some places. A closer shot of the same fungi not really graphic but I wouldn't really want to see it mid bite of say some oatmeal...
