Thanks to the recent Merc article, I'm pretty sure Eli Arnold meets Wikipedia's notability standards now!! Therefore...

Wikipedia has a serious issue when it comes to "notability". I get that they want to limit their site to important topics, but that term is so vague that determining a subject's notability really comes down to internal Wiki editor politics.

Some options will be roughly equal in notability, like Portland OR and Portland ME, or easily confused, like Saint John NB and St. John's NI.

So you write and edit for clarity and consistency, not to look smart for bad faith audiences

Completely agree.

There is nothing inherently unique about this particular phone box apart from an coincidence of timing. It is clearly not going to be looked after and it's surroundings have already changed, and gotten worse, since it's installation so it fails notability on that measure.
This stuff is just perverse, sorry. Literally all the time, energy, fundraising, money spent listing a telephone kiosk where no-one is ever going to look at it should instead be about carting it off and putting it in a museum next to a bunch of other communications devices.

The notability rules tend to reward publicity over historical significance, which is great, because what you want is fucking People Magazine with footnotes.

I wrote something about what I'm calling "pre-existing notability" and the effect it has on elections in the U.S., specifically whether or not a candidate has a Wikipedia article (and how Wikipedia's current system could tip elections toward incumbents.) edithistory.substack.com/p/do-wikiped...
Do Wikipedia’s systems protect incumbent candidates in U.S. elections?

It's fair to question the notability of a person who is, again, on the cover of New York magazine because of a self-written article complaining about cancel culture. "Complaining about cancel culture" is a thing that's generally only done by people who aren't particularly famous looking to gain fame

But most style guides will nevertheless specify that cities and towns give the US state or foreign country on first use for clarity, without an exception for locations that are well known. Such an exception puts you in the unwinnable position of having to guess where the cutoff is for notability

The rhetorical point being made is “If you are on the cover of NYM arguing your notability is so important that your cancellation(s) is important, why haven’t i heard of you?” The literal knowledge is not the point. It’s a metaphorical jerk off motion in her direction

There are more sources now, but late 2024 her own wiki page was deleted and salted for lack of notability and because of mischief by Wolk.

Folks should chillax… Rep Raskin is a leader in the House, has national notability and is a great explainer of things. We need him nationwide.

Congratulations on your notability!

- Wikidata: Does it meet Wikidata notability? At least one of the three criteria should hold.
- Wikibase Cloud: Does it align with WMDE's mission and the role Cloud should play in the Wikibase ecosystem? See the Hosting Policy.

Hell, it's sometimes not even the fault of PKM folks. General knowledge bases like Wikipedia have notability and sourcing requirements, and specialized wikis might be too narrow in scope to include it (I think of software history here).

gotta notability max

A rejected Did You Know hook rarely has a sourcing problem. It has an adjective problem. Volunteers reviewing a 200-character sentence catch promotional language that a longer deletion discussion sometimes misses entirely.
Write a hook that survives review
Five times the length, seven days to nominate, two hundred characters for the sentence: Did You Know runs its own test, independent of notability, and it rejects promotional language before anyone even checks the source.

Dimoska’s biography was eventually retained on the site, after lengthy discussion and examination of her achievements and their notability. It now carries a disclaimer that it contains “promotional content.” www.wired.com/story/the-tr...

A well-run nonprofit can produce an audited annual report, a glossy impact study, and a tax filing — and none of it counts toward a Wikipedia article, because all three were written by the organization describing itself. Independence, not volume, is the test.
'Our annual report has the numbers'
An audited annual report, a forty-page impact study, a public tax filing. None of it is independent of the organization that produced it — and notability runs on exactly what none of those documents can supply.

It’s such a baffling decision that people in the comments are speculating that it’s the result of Glyer losing a legal settlement of some sort

I think it’s less out of character for him. He’s always thought of file770 as a SFF “newspaper of record”, with notability trumping good taste
