Governor Phil Murphy has initiated a series of actions aimed at easing the impact of predicted utility price increases set to begin on June 1, 2025. Recognizing the significant burden these increases will place on New Jersey residents, Governor Murphy emphasized the need for the state’s four electric utilities to actively participate in finding solutions to the PJM cost crisis, citing their substantial profits over the past decade. The administration pledges to explore all possible avenues to lessen the impact on ratepayers. The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU), under the guidance of President Christine Guhl-Sadovy, is central to these mitigation efforts. The board recently approved a second Residential Energy Assistance Payment and is expanding the Universal Service Fund (USF) program to provide bill credits for customers earning up to 60% of the state's median income. Furthermore, a new allocation for the Community Solar Energy Program (CSEP) has been released, offering guaranteed savings and discounts of at least 15% for participants. The NJBPU is also advancing grid-scale solar projects through a Competitive Solar Solicitation. The administration highlights the importance of clean energy sources, particularly solar and storage, as crucial for long-term cost reduction and reliable power. To further stabilize energy costs, the NJBPU, acting on the Governor’s direction, has launched a Request for Information concerning nuclear generation and advanced nuclear technologies. Existing energy efficiency programs, already delivering $600 million in customer savings, will continue to generate further savings. Various assistance programs are accessible to utility customers, including the Universal Service Fund, Fresh Start Program, Payment Assistance for Gas and Electric (PAGE) Program, Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, Lifeline, NJ Shares, NJ Comfort Partners, and the Winter Termination Program, which prevents service disruption during the winter months. The Murphy Administration remains dedicated to ensuring affordable energy for all residents and assisting them in navigating these challenging times.
