Cold calling is coming to an end in France, with one consumer group calling the ban a "small revolution".

A 56-year-old man from Chifley has been arrested and charged with 10 counts of making vexatious calls to emergency services after allegedly harassing operators multiple times. Police confirmed the man, who was detained at his home on Sunday, called triple zero but hung up before speaking. When contacted by staff, he reportedly became verbally abusive. Authorities warned that misuse of emergency numbers can delay critical responses to genuine emergencies. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about inappropriate use of 000 and 131 444 lines. The man is set to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday, July 13, 2026. ACT Policing reiterated that making false reports or wasting resources is a criminal offence under both state and federal laws.

Cold callers will no longer be able to hide or disguise their phone numbers as Government continues to crack down on nuisance calls.
